"If you have a dream, don't give up, but give your best", Reno said, right before the last song of ViViD's triumphant performance at Nippon Budokan, deep emotions apparent in his voice.
After hardly a year since their major debut and in less than four years after their formation, ViViD had conquered the stage of Nippon Budokan - a big step in the career of any band in Japan. Many might have thought it was too early, but on the night of January 7th 2012, ViViD proved them all wrong.
Being dressed in pure white, ViViD opened the concert with their major debut single "夢~ムゲンノカナタ~ / Yume ~Mugen no Kanata~", starting off with full force and urging the audience to head bang from the very first moment.
From the heavier and more aggressive songs like "69-II" and "悪女♂トリッキー / AKUJO TRICKY", to the lighter and more pop-ish songs like "カケラ / Kakera" and "PRECIOUS", ViViD showed their full potential of styles and how they were able to draw the audience into their own world completely. Within moments, they smoothly shifted from powerful pop-rock songs like "BLUE" to a burst of starry glitter in "Trail of Tears" to soft piano sounds.
Especially the voice-range of vocalist Shin impressed the audience as he shouted and rapped, while also presenting his deep, pure singing voice in songs like "夏花 / Natsubana" to the acoustic guitars of Reno and Ryoga. Reno also, ever so often showed off his talent for fast-paced guitar solos, which often times were complemented by Ryoga's or matched perfectly as twin-guitars between the two of them.
Iv and Ko-ki perfected the rhythm section, with IV's energetic bass lines and Ko-ki's powerful drum play. Ko-ki also presented a lengthy drum solo, completely "drumming out" all of his energy and feelings, highlighted on the high drum raiser in the middle of the stage.
"We are not standing on this stage of Nippon Budokan for the first time for no reason. This is all thanks to you, who came to see us, the staff and our families who supported us", Shin said. "You are our strength, no matter if you have been supporting us from the very beginning, or just found interest recently. We are grateful for all of you."
While the members moved across the stage freely during the performance, playfully interacting with each other - like IV joining Shin ever so often at the raiser at center stage, or Reno and Ryoga playing face to face in between, the members also never forgot to interact with the audience. They sprinted to each side of the stage over two long cat-walks, being welcomed by their fans with excited cheers.
During "FAKE" Shin forcefully hugged Iv, placing his head on his shoulders and his hand in the bassist hair, which perfectly matched the atmosphere of the songs.
Yet, emotions ran deep as the concert's end drew nearer and each of the members directed a few words towards the audience, tears choking their voices now and then.
Ko-ki: "The goal I am aiming for is still ahead, and while I think that the times to come will be even harder than until now, I believe that being in a band is fun. Therefore I am counting on you."
IV: "I am happy that so many of you came to see us today. It was in high school that I came to Nippon Budokan, sitting in the same spots you are right now. It was the moment when I wanted to be in a band and stand on this stage myself. It's awesome."
Ryoga: "Welcome to the live house Budokan! I thought a lot about what to say today, but it all comes down to: Thank you for letting us stand on this stage."
Reno: "This performance was announced in May and many have told us that it was too early. We did it anyway. Until we were able to reach this stage, there were many hurdles and much insecurity. All of us are very strong-minded, so we get into fights, but we started from how we could make ViViD a better band. We do want to continue making music together."
Shin: "I still remember, that at our first one-man live at Shibuya O-WEST, we all jumped together and that I said, that I want to perform this same jump with everyone at Nippon Budokan. As this dream is coming true today, I want to promise you the next thing: We will perform this same jump at Tokyo Dome as well in the future."
With Shin's words, the band finished off the set with "Dear", a song whole hearted-ly directed at their fans, before all of them joined hands, for this one jump towards the bright and vivid future ahead.
